Our Pets 2008

Every year as part of our Discover Science Project, we take care of some insects and look at their lifecycles.

We are also taken the delivery of our caterpillars.

Our stick insects from last year have now all died but they did manage to lay a lot of eggs. We will be looking carefully now to see if any of these hatch.

This year for the first time, we are going to study the lifecycle of the ladybird. The 'baby' ladybirds have arrived and will live in Mrs Somerville's house during the holidays. Have a look at their baby photographs and come back soon to find out how they are doing.

Update - 4th April 2008

The ladybirds have now formed pupae (a bit like when the caterpillar forms its chrysalis) and will stay in them for about 7 days. There are about 20 of these but it is very had to count them because while the nymphs were growing they shed their skins and these are also black.

Update 11th April 2008

The ladybirds have emerged from the pupae. At first they were yellow and black but they turned red and black after a day or so. We had hoped to be able to release them this week but it has been so cold that we are going to keep them for a while longer. We are feeding them raisins!
