Hopefully you all had a lovely evening and enjoyed the Sponsored Walk.  We were lucky to have such fantastic weather. Thank you to everyone who helped this evening - in particular, Mr Barnett for accompanying the cycle; Ezra, Gary and George for driving cars and vans; those who helped with serving/preparing food and everyone who helped tidy up.  Thank you also to everyone for making the effort to come along and walk or cycle with the children.

Have a look in the Gallery at the photographs.

Congratulations!

We send our congratulations and best wishes to Noel and Emma on the birth of their baby daughter, Lucy, a little sister for Dillon and Calvin.  We look forward to seeing her in school very soon.

We will be continuing to administer tests this week so please try to avoid absences or morning appointments if possible.

Rossnowlagh

We will be visiting Rossnowlagh on Wednesday 29th May.  The older children will be taking part in a workshop on the beach.  This is part of our science work and we will be investigating the plants and animals which live in a beach environment.  The younger children will have their own activities.  Some of you may remember our last attempt to visit the beach.  Hopefully the weather will be much kinder this time!

Swimming

Next Thursday will be our last day of swimming.  The children have had their swimming tests and have all done well. We thank Alan and Ezra for giving up their time and voluntarily accompanying us to the pool and also Cathrena for staying late on Thursdays to come with us too.

Sponsored Walk

The Sponsored Walk will be held on Thursday 30th May at 5.30 p.m.  Mr Barnett has kindly agreed to help with the cycle again this year and we thank him for that.  Children will need a helmet if they are planning to go on the cycle.  Donations of crisps/biscuits can be sent in to school any day before Thursday.

Internet Safety Talk

Garda Paddy Battle will be coming into school on Wednesday 29th May at 8 p.m.to give a talk to parents on Internet Safety and Cyber Bullying.  Please try to attend if you can.

Get Well Soon

I am aware of two parents who are unwell and have recently spent time in hospital.  We send our best wishes to Mark, Abbie and Ben's dad and to Nuala, Louise and Nathan's mum and we hope they are both feeling better soon.

New Junior Infants

Our second session for our new Junior Infants will be on Wednesday 19th June from 9.30 a.m. until 11.00 a.m.  This time the children will remain in school without Mums and Dads and they will need to bring along a snack for break time.

Lunchboxes/Food Dudes

Thank you for the fantastic efforts made this week with the children's lunchboxes!  It is wonderful to see the children munching happily on carrots, lettuce. cucumber, sweetcorn etc.

There are still plenty of prizes to be won and the children are enjoying finding out what is in the Food Dude's box.

Of course, just like at Christmas...it is often much more fun just to play with the box!

I think this one is a rocket...

Rockets

The Infants (and their mums and dads!) have been very busy building rockets this week.  Take time to look at the photos in the Gallery.

Food Dudes

We are now into the second phase of Food Dudes and the children now need to bring fruit and vegetables from home every day to win their prizes.  The first phase was very successful so please continue to encourage the children.

Sponsored Walk

If you can help in any way with the organisation of the Sponsored Walk, please let us know.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.
We are also asking for donations of crisps for the children and biscuits for the adults.  These can be sent into school at any time.

Irish Classes

13/5/2013

We are hoping to organise some conversational Irish classes (with Keith Corcoran) for parents in September.  The purpose of the lessons is to give parents the opportunity to learn and practise some of the most commonly used phrases in Irish so that they can encourage and support the children's Irish at home.  There will be a small charge for the lessons and we would hope to run the lessons over a 7 or 8 week period.  If you are interested in coming along, please either return the slip sent home with the children or fill in the form below.

I would be interested in attending Irish classes in September.

Visit to Brownhall

The children in the Senior Room had a great day in Brownhall on Wednesday.  The children were able to take samples of water from the Blackwater river and determine the quality of the water.  We were treated to a guided tour around the grounds of Brownhall and even heard some ghost stories.  The school was presented with a signed copy of the book,  'John Hamilton of Donegal'.  Our sincere thanks to Paul Gallagher for organising this trip for us, to Jonathan Mitchell for helping and to Mrs and Mrs John Hamilton for their hospitality, kindness and Jaffa Cakes.
Have a look at the photographs in the Gallery.

Football Blitz

Despite the inclement weather on Friday and the mud, the children enjoyed the opportunity to meet up with the children from St. Ernan's and St. Eunan's for some games of football.  We would like to say thank you to Gerard Gallagher and the Naomh Bríd Committee for inviting us along and also for funding our recent lessons in school.  We especially thank Patrice Rooney for her work in school over the past few weeks and her work on Friday, those who helped organise and referee the games and the very kind gentlemen who made us tea!
Rossnowlagh Trip

We are hoping to bring all of the children on a trip to Rossnowlagh on Wednesday 29th May.  As part of our work for our third Green Flag, the older children will be studying the seashore as a habitat.
Hopefully, between now and then the weather will improve.

Competition Winners

Well done to Katherine, Aimee  and Bobbie  who won prizes in the competition held recently by the Northwest Vintage and Heritage Club.

Test Week

Don't forget that Standardised Testing will take place between Monday 20th and Thursday 30th May. No absences or appointments during this time please.

Discover Primary Science

We had great news on Thursday - we have just been awarded our 8th Discover Science Award.  Thank you to everyone for all the hard work which went into this year's project and especially to Mrs Gourley for overseeing and organising the project.  This year's folder is on display in the entrance foyer.  Please take time to have a look.

Food Dudes

The programme is proving to be an overwhelming success.  So far, most of the fruit and vegetables have been eaten enthusiastically by most children.  The children have been making comments such as 'Oh, these are quite nice actually' and 'I didn't like tomatoes until today'.  We hope you will continue to encourage the children.

Cartoonist

Unfortunately our visit from the cartoonist had to be cancelled on Wednesday.  We hope to rearrange it for a later date.

Sports' Blitz

Our Sports Blitz also had to be rearranged last week.  We hope it will now take place on Friday 10th May.

Visit to Brownhall

As part of our work for our third Green Flag, the children in the Senior Room will be visiting Brownhall on Wednesday 8th May.  We thank Mr John Hamilton for facilitating our visit. We also thank Inland Fisheries and in particular, Paul Gallagher for arranging this trip for us.

Gaeltacht

Beidh triúr pháiste ó Rang 5/6 ag taisteal go dtí an Ghaeltacht ar 14ú Bealtaine.  Ta suil againn go mbainfidh siad taitneamh as an turas.  Three children from 5th/6th Class will be travelling to the Gaeltacht on 14th May.  We hope they enjoy their trip.

Standardised Tests

Standardised Tests will be carried out during the fortnight beginning 20th May.  Please try to avoid all absences and appointments during this time.

Literacy Questionnaires

Thank you all for your responses to our Literacy Questionnaire.  We also asked the children to complete a similar one.  I will shortly be sending home details of the responses and a summary report on the results of our evaluation of English in our school.
